II. Legal Academy Norms

This chapter examines the norms of the legal academy when a faculty member is also practicing law within the academy as a law clinic attorney. It begins with an excerpt from an article by Kuehn and Joy (“Lawyering in the Academy: The Intersection of Academic Freedom and Professional Responsibility”) that provides guidance on the tension between a clinic lawyer’s duties to clients and their rights and responsibilities as a faculty member. The chapter then sets out statements by the American Bar Association (ABA), Association of American Law Schools (AALS), and American Association of University Professors (AAUP) that address the academic freedom rights of a law clinic attorney.
